It is assessed by three written papers, each 2 hours, worth 96 marks and 33.3% of the A-level, with no coursework. Paper 1 is Introductory topics in psychology, Paper 2 is Psychology in context, and Paper 3 is Issues and options in psychology.
Paper 1 covers social influence, memory, attachment and clinical psychology and mental health. Paper 2 covers approaches, biopsychology and research methods. Paper 3 covers issues and debates plus one optional topic from each of three blocks, such as relationships, schizophrenia and aggression.
At least 25 to 30% of the marks assess research methods, and at least 10% require maths at higher-tier GCSE level, including descriptive statistics and choosing inferential tests. Research methods is examined across all three papers, so it rewards thorough revision.
Divide your answer between accurate description (AO1) and developed evaluation (AO3): outline the theory or studies, then build evaluation points using research, counterarguments and issues and debates, and reach a clear conclusion.
