What the Behaviourist Approach Assumes

The behaviourist approach argues that psychology should be a science, so it studies only observable behaviour — things that can be measured directly in a controlled experiment. Internal mental processes such as thoughts and feelings are rejected as too subjective to study objectively.

Behaviourists make three key assumptions:

  • We are born a blank slate, or tabula rasa — there is no innate behaviour. Everything we do is learned from the environment.
  • Behaviour is learned through experience, specifically through the two forms of conditioning covered in this lesson.
  • Humans and animals learn in the same way, through the same basic laws of learning. This is why behaviourists rely heavily on animal studies — if the learning process is universal, a rat or a dog can reveal how a human learns.

Tabula rasa (Latin for "blank slate") is the assumption that we are born with no innate behaviour, so all behaviour is acquired from the environment.

These assumptions matter because they justify the whole method: if only observable behaviour counts, and if animals learn as humans do, then tightly controlled lab experiments on animals become a legitimate way to explain human behaviour.

Classical Conditioning: Learning by Association

Classical conditioning is learning by association. It was demonstrated by Ivan Pavlov (1927) in his research on dogs. The core idea is that a new stimulus can come to trigger a reflex response if it is repeatedly paired with a stimulus that already produces that response.

Pavlov noticed that dogs salivated automatically at the sight of food. He then paired a bell with the food. Work through the four key terms in order:

  • Unconditioned stimulus (UCS) — the food, which naturally causes salivation.
  • Unconditioned response (UCR) — salivation to the food, an automatic reflex.
  • Neutral stimulus (NS) — the bell, which at first produces no salivation.
  • Conditioned stimulus (CS) — the bell, once it has been paired with food enough times.
  • Conditioned response (CR) — salivation to the bell alone, now a learned response.

The timing of the pairing matters: the neutral stimulus must be presented at roughly the same time as (or just before) the unconditioned stimulus for the association to form.

Extinction, Recovery and Generalisation

Pavlov's research also identified how a conditioned response can weaken, return and spread. These features are commonly tested, so learn each term with its meaning.

  • Extinction — if the conditioned stimulus (the bell) is presented repeatedly without the unconditioned stimulus (the food), the conditioned response gradually fades and eventually stops. The dog learns that the bell no longer predicts food.
  • Spontaneous recovery — after extinction, if the conditioned stimulus and unconditioned stimulus are paired again, the conditioned response returns much more quickly than it was first learned. The association was weakened, not erased.
  • Generalisation — once a response is conditioned, stimuli similar to the conditioned stimulus also trigger it. A dog conditioned to a bell of one pitch may salivate to bells of a slightly different pitch.

Classical conditioning explains reflexive, automatic responses such as salivation, blinking or fear — not deliberate, voluntary actions. That distinction becomes important when comparing it with operant conditioning.

Operant Conditioning: Learning by Consequences

Operant conditioning is learning by consequences. It was developed by B. F. Skinner (1953), who argued that behaviour is shaped by what happens after it. If a behaviour is followed by a desirable outcome it is repeated; if it is followed by an unpleasant outcome it is not.

Skinner tested this using the Skinner box, a controlled cage containing a lever, a food dispenser and sometimes an electrified floor. He placed rats (and in other studies pigeons) inside and recorded how the consequences of pressing the lever changed the rate of pressing.

  • When a rat pressed the lever and received a food pellet, it pressed the lever more often.
  • When a rat could switch off an unpleasant electric current by pressing the lever, it also learned to press the lever more often.

The Skinner box mattered because it isolated a single behaviour (lever pressing) in a highly controlled environment, so the effect of the consequence could be measured precisely — exactly the kind of objective, replicable method the behaviourist approach values.

In operant conditioning the learner is active: the behaviour is emitted first, and its consequence then determines whether it is repeated. This is the opposite order to classical conditioning, where the stimulus comes first and the response is automatic.

Reinforcement and Punishment

Skinner identified three types of consequence. The rule to memorise is simple: reinforcement increases a behaviour; punishment decreases it. Reinforcement can be positive or negative, but both make the behaviour more likely.

Worked examples for each:

  • Positive reinforcement — a rat presses the lever and receives a food pellet. A pleasant consequence is added, so lever pressing increases.
  • Negative reinforcement — a rat presses the lever to switch off an electric shock. An unpleasant experience is removed, so lever pressing increases.
  • Punishment — a rat presses the lever and receives a shock. An unpleasant consequence is added, so lever pressing decreases.

Negative reinforcement is not punishment. Negative reinforcement removes something unpleasant to increase behaviour; punishment adds something unpleasant to decrease behaviour. Confusing the two is one of the most common exam errors.

Evaluation

You must be able to evaluate the approach (AO3), not just describe it. Aim for a few developed points that each state the criticism or strength and explain why it matters.

Scientific credibility. The approach relies on highly controlled lab experiments, such as Pavlov's conditioning trials and the Skinner box. Controlling variables gives the research objectivity and makes it replicable, which helped establish psychology as a scientific discipline. This is a genuine strength, because measurable, repeatable methods are the basis of any science.

Real-world application. Conditioning principles have practical value. Token economy systems in prisons and psychiatric institutions reward desirable behaviour with tokens (positive reinforcement) that can be exchanged for privileges, and behavioural therapies based on classical conditioning are used to treat phobias. This shows the approach explains behaviour well enough to change it.

Environmental determinism. The approach sees all behaviour as determined by past reinforcement history, leaving no room for free will or conscious decision-making. Critics argue this is an oversimplified, mechanistic view that ignores the role of choice, so it may not fully capture human behaviour.

Animal research issues. Because the approach is built on studies of rats and pigeons, some question whether findings generalise to humans, who have far more complex thought processes and language. There are also ethical concerns about exposing animals in Skinner's and Pavlov's research to stressful conditions such as hunger and electric shocks.

A strong AO3 point does three things: states the point, explains it, and links it back to the behaviourist approach. Naming an application such as token economies or a phobia therapy turns a vague claim into a creditworthy one.

Common Exam Mistakes

1. Confusing negative reinforcement with punishment

Negative reinforcement increases behaviour by removing something unpleasant. Punishment decreases behaviour by adding something unpleasant. If a question describes a behaviour becoming more likely, it cannot be punishment.

2. Mixing up the conditioning terms

Keep the pairs straight: the UCS and UCR are the natural, unlearned pair (food and reflex salivation); the CS and CR are the learned pair (the bell and salivation to the bell). Swapping "unconditioned" and "conditioned" loses marks.

3. Attributing the Skinner box to Pavlov

Pavlov used dogs to study classical conditioning (learning by association). Skinner used the Skinner box with rats and pigeons to study operant conditioning (learning by consequences). Do not credit Pavlov with the Skinner box.

4. Saying classical conditioning explains voluntary behaviour

Classical conditioning explains reflexive, automatic responses such as salivation, blinking and fear. Voluntary, deliberate behaviour that is shaped by its consequences is explained by operant conditioning instead.

5. Describing without evaluating

A question that asks you to evaluate or discuss the approach needs AO3: scientific credibility, real-world application, environmental determinism and animal research. A pure description of Pavlov and Skinner will only reach the lower bands.
