What Ethical Issues Are

An ethical issue arises when a conflict exists between the rights of the participants in a study and the goals the researcher needs the study to achieve. Psychologists cannot simply do whatever produces the most useful data; they have a duty to protect the people they study.

Two ideas are examined separately and you must keep them apart:

  • an ethical issue is the problem — a way in which a study threatens participants' rights or wellbeing;
  • dealing with an ethical issue is the solution — a specific technique used to reduce or remove that threat.

A question asking for an ethical issue wants the problem (for example, deception). A question asking how it is dealt with wants the technique (for example, a debrief). Answering with the wrong one of the two loses marks even when the psychology is correct.

The core ethical issues on the AQA specification are informed consent, deception, protection from harm, privacy and confidentiality, and the right to withdraw. The following slides take each in turn, then set out the professional code that governs them, before turning to peer review and the economy.

The Core Ethical Issues and How to Deal With Them

Each issue has a matching way of dealing with it. Learn them as pairs, because most exam questions give you a scenario and ask you to identify the issue and then resolve it.

Confidentiality (protecting data) and privacy (the right to control information about yourself, for example not being observed in a private place) are closely linked but distinct: privacy concerns the space a person is in, confidentiality concerns what happens to their data afterwards.

Consent When You Cannot Fully Inform

Sometimes telling participants the true aims would ruin the study, because knowing the aim changes how people behave (this is a demand characteristic). Full informed consent is then impossible, so psychologists use alternative forms of consent.

Retrospective consent has an obvious weakness: the participant has already taken part, so if they refuse there is nothing to undo. It resolves the paperwork, not the original ethical breach, which is why deception must still be justified in the first place.

These alternatives are not a free pass. They are ways of dealing with the issue that a study is designed to require deception, and each is weaker than genuine informed consent given in advance.

The BPS Code of Ethics and Conduct

The British Psychological Society (BPS) publishes a professional Code of Ethics and Conduct that psychologists in the UK are expected to follow. It exists so that participants are protected consistently, not left to the judgement of individual researchers.

The code is built on four ethical principles:

Before a study runs, it is scrutinised by an ethics committee. The committee performs a cost-benefit analysis: it weighs the potential costs to participants (distress, deception, loss of privacy) against the potential benefits of the research (new knowledge, better treatments, social value). Only if the benefits are judged to outweigh the costs is the study approved.

Peer Review in the Scientific Process

Peer review is the process by which a piece of research is independently assessed by other experts in the same field before it is published, and it is also used to decide which research receives funding. The reviewers are usually anonymous and unpaid, and they check the work critically.

Peer review has three main purposes:

  1. Allocating research funding. Bodies deciding how to spend limited money use peer review to judge which proposals are worthwhile.
  2. Validating the quality and relevance of research. Reviewers check that the methodology is sound, the conclusions follow from the data, and the work is accurate and original.
  3. Suggesting amendments and improvements. Reviewers may recommend changes, request revisions, or advise that a paper is not published in its current form.

The single most common misconception is that peer review happens after publication. It happens before: research is filtered by review first, which is exactly why published findings carry more weight than an unreviewed blog post or press release.

Because review comes first, it acts as a quality gate for the whole discipline. Only work that survives independent scrutiny reaches journals, which is what lets other scientists trust and build on it.

Evaluating Peer Review

Peer review is valuable, but it is not perfect, and a good answer weighs strengths against limitations rather than treating it as flawless.

Strengths

  • It maintains standards across the discipline by preventing weak or fraudulent work from being published unchecked.
  • It catches errors and unsupported conclusions that the original authors missed, improving the final quality of the work.

Limitations

  • Publication bias. Journals and reviewers tend to favour research with positive, statistically significant results. Studies that find no effect are less likely to be published, which distorts the overall picture of what is known.
  • Preserving the status quo. Established reviewers may be reluctant to accept findings that challenge existing theory, so peer review can suppress opposition and slow down genuinely new ideas.
  • Anonymity misused. Because reviewers are usually anonymous, a reviewer can be unfairly critical of a rival's work, or use their position to protect their own standing, without accountability.
  • It cannot always detect fraud. Reviewers read the report, not the raw data collection; deliberate fabrication can slip through and may only be exposed much later.

A balanced conclusion: peer review is the best available system for maintaining scientific quality, but publication bias and its treatment of unwelcome findings mean it should not be treated as a guarantee that published research is correct.

Implications of Psychological Research for the Economy

The economy is about the production, distribution and use of wealth. Psychological research affects it whenever findings change how people work, how much time they take off, or how public money and policy are directed. The exam wants a concrete link from a specific piece of research to money or jobs, not a vague claim that research "helps society".

Three worked links you can use:

  • Attachment research and the workforce. Research on attachment (for example on the effects of the early bond and of maternal deprivation) informs childcare provision and parental-leave decisions. Understanding that flexible, high-quality childcare need not damage a child's development supports policies that let both parents return to work, keeping more skilled people economically active rather than out of the workforce.
  • Treatments for mental illness and absence from work. Depression and anxiety are leading causes of sick days. Research producing effective treatments — drug therapies and CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) — means people recover faster and take less time off. Fewer sick days and more people staying in employment directly reduce costs to employers and to the state, and keep individuals earning and paying tax.
  • Eyewitness testimony and the justice system. Research into the unreliability of eyewitness memory and into the cognitive interview improves the accuracy of evidence, reducing costly wrongful convictions and wasted police and court time.

To turn any of these into a mark, finish the chain: research → a change in behaviour or policy → an effect on jobs, absence, or public spending. A study that "improves understanding" earns the economy mark only once you spell out the money or employment consequence.

Common Exam Mistakes

1. Treating "ethical issues" and "ways of dealing with them" as the same thing

The issue is the problem (deception, lack of informed consent); the way of dealing with it is the technique (a debrief, a consent form). A question naming one wants exactly that one. Listing "deception" when asked how an issue is dealt with scores nothing.

2. Saying deception is never allowed

Deception can be justified when a study cannot work without it and the potential harm is low, provided participants receive a full debrief afterwards. Writing that deception is banned outright is factually wrong and misses the point that it is managed, not prohibited.

3. Thinking peer review happens after publication

Peer review takes place before research is published and is used to decide funding. It is a filter that work must pass through, not a check carried out on work that is already in print.

4. Giving a vague economy point with no worked link

Saying research "benefits society" or "helps the economy" without a concrete chain does not earn the mark. Name a specific area (attachment, treatment of mental illness, eyewitness testimony) and follow it through to an effect on jobs, absence from work, or public spending.

5. Reducing the BPS code to a single rule

The BPS Code of Ethics rests on four principles — respect, competence, responsibility and integrity — and studies are cleared by an ethics committee that weighs costs against benefits. Describing it as just "getting consent" misses most of what the code covers.
