Frequently asked questions
It is assessed by two written papers, each 1 hour 45 minutes and worth 100 marks, making up 50% of the GCSE each. There is no coursework, but exam questions can test the eight required practicals.
Paper 1 covers atomic structure and the periodic table, bonding and structure, quantitative chemistry, chemical changes and energy changes. Paper 2 covers rates and equilibrium, organic chemistry, chemical analysis, chemistry of the atmosphere and using resources.
Foundation tier targets grades 1 to 5 and Higher tier targets grades 4 to 9. Higher tier includes extra content such as moles calculations, Le Chatelier's principle and half equations, so revise to the tier you are entered for.
There are eight: making a soluble salt, titration, electrolysis, temperature changes, rates of reaction, chromatography, testing for ions and water purification. Questions often test the method, variables and reasoning rather than just the result.
