Social Learning Theory of Gender

Social learning theory (SLT) explains gender-related behaviour as learned from the social environment rather than being wholly innate. A child acquires masculine or feminine behaviour by observing others, imitating them, and being reinforced for the behaviours they produce.

The account rests on the same mechanisms as Bandura's wider social learning theory, applied to gender:

In SLT, gender is something a child learns to perform, built up from countless everyday examples of how males and females are expected to behave, not something fixed at birth by biology alone.

Because the behaviour is learned, SLT predicts that what counts as masculine or feminine can differ between families, cultures and historical periods, a prediction later slides test against the evidence.

Direct Reinforcement and Differential Reinforcement

Direct reinforcement is reward or punishment a child receives first-hand for their own behaviour. A child who is praised for a behaviour is more likely to repeat it; a child who is criticised is less likely to.

Applied to gender, adults tend to reward boys and girls for different behaviours. This is called differential reinforcement: the two groups are encouraged toward different conduct, and through this process children gradually learn their gender identity.

Differential reinforcement is the mechanism by which children learn what is "gender-appropriate": boys and girls are systematically rewarded for showing different behaviours, and so come to see certain conduct as fitting their gender.

The key exam distinction is that direct reinforcement is about consequences the child experiences themselves, in contrast to the vicarious learning covered next.

Vicarious Reinforcement, Identification and Modelling

Vicarious reinforcement is learning the likely consequences of a behaviour by watching someone else experience them. If a child sees a model rewarded for a gendered behaviour, imitation of that behaviour becomes more likely; if the model is punished, imitation becomes less likely.

Children are especially drawn to same-gender role models. Through identification, a child aligns themselves with models they see as like them, and is then more motivated to imitate their behaviour.

For imitation to occur, the four mediational processes must be satisfied:

Worked example. A young girl watches an older sister praised for helping to cook a meal. She has paid attention, can retain the sequence, is able to reproduce it, and is now motivated because she saw the reward. Days later she offers to help in the kitchen. She has learned the behaviour vicariously, then imitated a same-gender model she identifies with.

The Influence of Culture on Gender Roles

If gender behaviour is learned, then culture should shape it, and different societies should show different gender roles. This is broadly what cross-cultural research reports.

Mead's research in Papua New Guinea studied three neighbouring societies and found that the behaviours regarded as typical for men and women varied between them, rather than following one universal pattern. This variation is difficult to explain if gender roles are fixed by biology, but fits neatly with a learning account in which each culture reinforces its own expectations.

Cross-cultural variation is a central piece of support for SLT: where gender roles differ from one society to another, the differences point to learning from the social environment rather than to a single innate blueprint.

A careful reading matters here. Cultural variation shows that the content of gender roles is shaped by learning; it does not by itself prove that biology plays no part. Mead's findings have also been reinterpreted and debated by later researchers, so they are best treated as suggestive evidence rather than proof.

The Influence of Media on Gender Roles

Media (television, film, advertising, social media) is a powerful source of gender learning because it supplies a large number of role models and a great deal of information about "gender-appropriate" behaviour.

Media influences gender roles in three main ways:

  • Providing models. Characters and public figures act as models whose gendered behaviour can be observed and imitated.
  • Reinforcing stereotypes. Media frequently portrays males and females in stereotyped roles, repeatedly signalling what each gender is "supposed" to do.
  • Raising self-efficacy. Seeing models similar to oneself succeed at a task can raise a viewer's self-efficacy, their belief that they too can perform it, making imitation more likely.

Worked example. A girl who repeatedly sees women portrayed as scientists and engineers gains both a model to imitate and a boost to her self-efficacy about pursuing science. SLT predicts this makes her more likely to attempt such behaviour herself.

Media both reflects and reinforces existing gender stereotypes, which is why changes in media portrayals are argued to be one route through which gender roles shift over time.

Gender Incongruence: What It Is

Gender incongruence is a state in which a person's experienced gender identity does not match the sex they were assigned at birth.

The current AQA specification uses the term gender incongruence. Older material referred to this as gender dysphoria or gender identity disorder (GID); those labels are outdated, and using respectful, current terminology matters both in the exam and in general.

The specification requires two kinds of explanation, biological and social/cultural. These are best treated as complementary rather than as rival theories where one must be wholly right.

This is a socially sensitive research area. Findings should be described accurately and cautiously, and conclusions held tentatively, because the evidence base is limited and the topic concerns real people's identities.

Explanations of Gender Incongruence

Biological explanations propose that gender incongruence has physical roots.

  • Brain-sex theory. Certain brain structures may develop in a pattern more typical of the other sex. Zhou et al. (1995) found that the BSTc, a region of the hypothalamus, was, on average, closer in size to that of typical females in the transgender women they studied. Note this was post-mortem work on a small sample.
  • Genetic factors. Twin studies suggest a heritable component; Coolidge et al. (2002) concluded that a notable proportion of the variation in gender-related traits could be attributed to genetics.
  • Prenatal hormones. Exposure to particular levels of hormones during brain development is proposed to influence later gender identity.

Social/cultural explanations locate the causes in society rather than in biology.

  • Social constructionism holds that gender categories are created by society. On this view, gender incongruence may arise partly because a culture insists on rigid, binary categories that leave no place for those who do not fit them.
  • Consistent with this, incongruence is reported differently across cultures: societies that recognise more than two gender categories describe the experience in different terms from strictly binary cultures.
  • Other environmental accounts, including psychoanalytic ideas, have also been proposed, though these have limited empirical support.

Evaluation (AO3)

A strong answer weighs the theories rather than just describing them. Develop each point: state it, give the evidence or reasoning, then draw out the implication.

SLT explains cultural and historical change in gender roles. If gendered behaviour is learned, then roles can shift as a society changes, exactly what is observed as gender expectations evolve over decades and differ between cultures. This is something purely biological accounts struggle to explain. The limitation is that SLT downplays biology: the well-evidenced influence of chromosomes and hormones on development is given little weight, so a complete account cannot ignore it.

SLT struggles where reinforcement is not obvious. Some gender development occurs without a clear pattern of reward or modelling, which a learning account finds hard to explain. SLT also does not clearly separate learning gender roles (behaviours) from developing a gender identity (a sense of self), so it may describe how behaviour is acquired better than how identity forms.

Biological explanations of incongruence have some support but weak evidence. The BSTc findings are consistent with brain-sex theory, but the evidence is largely post-mortem and correlational, so it cannot establish cause. A specific confound is that the individuals studied had often received hormone treatment, which may itself have altered brain structure, making it hard to know whether brain differences are a cause or a consequence.

Social/cultural explanations are supported by cross-cultural variation, but ignoring biology is reductionist. That incongruence is described differently across cultures fits a social-constructionist view. However, treating it as purely social is reductionist in the other direction. A biosocial/interactionist account, combining biological predispositions with social and cultural influences, is likely the most complete. Given how socially sensitive this area is, conclusions should be drawn cautiously.

Common Exam Mistakes

1. Confusing direct and vicarious reinforcement

Direct reinforcement is a consequence the child experiences first-hand for their own behaviour. Vicarious reinforcement is learned by watching someone else be rewarded or punished. Mixing these up is one of the most common errors on this topic.

2. Treating SLT as able to explain everything about gender

SLT explains learned gender roles well, but it neglects biology. Presenting it as a complete account, with no acknowledgement of chromosomes and hormones, weakens an evaluation. Credit comes from recognising what the theory cannot explain.

3. Presenting biological or social explanations of incongruence as proven

The BSTc and twin-study findings are correlational and limited (small, post-mortem samples; a possible hormone-treatment confound). Writing that they "prove" a biological cause overclaims. The same caution applies to social/cultural accounts. An interactionist conclusion is safer and better rewarded.

4. Using outdated or disrespectful terminology

The current specification term is gender incongruence. Using older labels such as "gender identity disorder", or informal or disrespectful language, is both inaccurate for this spec and inappropriate for a sensitive topic. Match the terminology the specification uses.

5. Describing evidence without evaluating it

Naming Mead, Zhou et al. or Coolidge et al. earns AO1. Marks in the higher bands come from using that evidence: explaining what it supports, and identifying its weaknesses, such as sample size, correlational design or reinterpretation by later researchers.
