What Social Cognition Means

Social cognition is how we perceive, interpret and use information about other people and social situations. It is the mental processing that lets us make sense of what others are doing, thinking and feeling, so we can respond appropriately.

Reading a raised eyebrow, guessing why a friend went quiet, working out that someone is being sarcastic — all of these draw on social cognition. It develops across childhood, and this part of the AQA specification examines three strands of that development:

Social cognition is not the same as general cognition. It is specifically about processing information regarding people and social situations, rather than objects or abstract problems.

These three strands are complementary rather than competing. Selman describes how perspective-taking develops, theory of mind describes what mental-state understanding involves, and mirror neurons offer a possible biological mechanism underpinning both.

Selman's Levels of Perspective-Taking

Robert Selman studied social (or role) perspective-taking — the ability to appreciate a situation from another person's point of view. He presented children with interpersonal dilemmas and asked them to reason about the characters' viewpoints.

His best-known scenario is the "Holly and the kitten" dilemma: Holly has promised her father she will not climb trees, but her friend's kitten is stuck up one. Children were asked how each character would think and feel — for example, how Holly's father would react if she climbed up to rescue it. From how children reasoned, Selman identified five levels that develop with age.

Selman treated perspective-taking as a cognitive ability that develops in a fixed sequence, much as Piaget treated logical thinking. Ages are approximate guides, not rigid cut-offs.

The key trend is a steady move from seeing only one's own viewpoint towards coordinating several viewpoints at once and, finally, understanding that whole social systems shape how people see things.

Theory of Mind

Theory of mind (ToM) is the ability to understand that other people have their own beliefs, desires and intentions that may differ from one's own. It is often described informally as "mind-reading" — not literally sensing thoughts, but inferring the mental states behind someone's behaviour.

A child with theory of mind understands that:

  • What someone believes may be false, yet still drives their behaviour.
  • What someone wants (their desire) may differ from what the child wants.
  • Someone can intend one thing while doing another (for example, meaning well but making a mistake).

The classic way to test whether a child has ToM is a false-belief task: the child must recognise that another person holds a belief the child knows to be untrue. Passing requires separating one's own (accurate) knowledge from another person's (mistaken) belief.

Perspective-taking and theory of mind overlap but are not identical. Perspective-taking is chiefly about seeing a situation from another viewpoint; theory of mind is the broader ability to attribute mental states — beliefs, desires and intentions — to others.

A well-developed theory of mind is thought to underpin everyday social skills such as understanding deception, keeping secrets, and appreciating jokes that rely on someone being mistaken.

The Sally-Anne Study

Baron-Cohen, Leslie and Frith (1985) designed a false-belief task to test theory of mind in children, including children with autism. It uses two dolls, Sally and Anne.

The sequence acted out for the child is:

1. Sally places a marble in her BASKET.
2. Sally leaves the room.
3. While she is gone, Anne moves the marble to her BOX.
4. Sally returns.

Test question: "Where will Sally look for her marble?"

To answer correctly the child must set aside their own knowledge (the marble is really in the box) and reason from Sally's false belief: Sally did not see the marble moved, so she believes it is still in the basket. The ToM answer is therefore the basket.

The striking finding is that children with autism performed worse than children with Down's syndrome, even though the Down's syndrome group had, on average, lower general intellectual ability.

Because performance did not track general intelligence, the researchers argued the difficulty was specific to theory of mind. This is the study most often cited as evidence that autism may involve a theory of mind deficit.

The Mirror Neuron System

Mirror neurons are brain cells that fire both when an individual performs an action and when they observe someone else perform the same action. They were first identified by Rizzolatti and colleagues in the premotor cortex of monkeys, who noticed that the same neurons activated whether a monkey grasped food itself or watched a researcher grasp it.

The proposal is that this "mirroring" gives the brain an internal, first-hand model of another person's action — and possibly their intention behind it. On this view, mirror neurons may underpin:

  • Understanding others' intentions — simulating an observed action helps infer its goal.
  • Empathy — mirroring another's expressions or actions may help us share their emotional state.
  • Perspective-taking — a neural basis for experiencing a situation as another person might.

Some researchers extend this to autism through the "broken mirror" hypothesis, suggesting that a dysfunctional mirror neuron system could impair the social understanding, imitation and empathy that draw on it.

(Extra context — the "broken mirror" account of autism goes beyond what AQA 7182 requires: the current spec covers the mirror neuron system's role in social cognition, not mirror neurons as an explanation for autism. Useful as evaluation, but not a required example.)

Mirror neurons offer a possible biological mechanism for social cognition — a bridge between the behavioural accounts (Selman, ToM) and the underlying neuroscience. The hypothesis is influential but remains contested rather than settled.

Evaluation

The three accounts each have support, but each also has clear limitations, and no single one explains social cognition fully.

Selman — supporting evidence and application. Perspective-taking scores do increase with age broadly as Selman predicted, and his work has practical value: it informs interventions for children with social difficulties, such as programmes teaching children to consider others' viewpoints. However, the theory focuses narrowly on cognitive factors and neglects emotional, family and cultural influences on social development. Much of the supporting data are also correlational — age and perspective-taking rise together, but this does not on its own establish a fixed developmental cause.

Theory of mind and the Sally-Anne study — strong but not decisive. The finding of a specific difficulty in autism is robust and has been widely replicated. But false-belief tasks also place memory and language demands on the child: they must track the story and understand the question. Failing may therefore reflect these demands rather than a pure ToM deficit. Crucially, not all autistic people fail such tasks — around 20% passed even in the original study — so it is an overstatement to say autism always involves absent theory of mind.

Mirror neurons — exciting but overstated. The mirror neuron account is compelling, but much of the direct evidence comes from animal studies (single-cell recording in monkeys), which cannot be run the same way in humans, so human claims often rest on correlational brain-imaging data. Critics such as Hickok argue the role of mirror neurons in social cognition has been overstated, and that mirroring may follow from understanding an action rather than causing it.

Overall, social cognition is complex. Perspective-taking, theory of mind and mirror neurons each capture part of the picture, but none provides a complete explanation on its own — a strong essay uses them together rather than treating one as the whole answer.

Common Exam Mistakes

1. Muddling Selman's five levels

Learn the levels in order and pair each with its defining ability, not just its age. The examiner rewards what the child can do at each level (for example, level 2 = seeing your own view through another's eyes), so listing ages alone will not gain full credit.

2. Treating theory of mind and perspective-taking as identical

They overlap but are distinct. Perspective-taking (Selman) is chiefly about seeing a situation from another viewpoint; theory of mind is the broader ability to attribute beliefs, desires and intentions. Using the terms interchangeably suggests you do not understand either.

3. Over-claiming that mirror neurons "cause" empathy

Mirror neurons have been proposed to underpin empathy and intention-reading, but this is a contested hypothesis, and much evidence is from animal studies or is correlational. Write that they may support empathy, and note critics such as Hickok, rather than stating a settled causal fact.

4. Saying the Sally-Anne study shows all autistic people lack theory of mind

Only about 80% of the autistic children failed, so around 20% passed. The study suggests many autistic individuals may have a theory of mind difficulty — it does not show that every autistic person lacks theory of mind.

5. Giving your own knowledge as the answer to the false-belief question

The ToM answer to "Where will Sally look?" is the basket, because that is where Sally believes the marble is. Answering "the box" (where it really is) is exactly the error that signals a failure to represent someone else's false belief.
