What the Nature-Nurture Debate Asks

The nature-nurture debate concerns the relative importance of heredity and environment in determining behaviour. It is a question of proportion, not a simple contest with a single winner.

Nature refers to the influence of inherited factors: genes, biology and innate characteristics present from birth. The extreme nature position is called nativism, which holds that behaviour is largely genetically determined.

Nurture refers to the influence of the environment: experience, learning, upbringing and social conditions. The extreme nurture position is empiricism, which holds that the mind is a blank slate (tabula rasa) at birth and that all behaviour is learned.

The modern debate is rarely about whether nature or nurture matters. It is about how much each contributes and, more usefully, how the two interact to shape behaviour.

Because this is a synoptic topic, answers should illustrate the debate using knowledge of studies and approaches from across the specification.

The Nature Side: Heredity and Genes

The nature argument is that behaviour is innate and largely shaped by our genetic inheritance. Psychologists estimate the genetic contribution to a characteristic using the heritability coefficient.

The heritability coefficient is a numerical figure from 0 to 1. It estimates the extent to which variation in a characteristic across a population is due to genetic rather than environmental factors. A value of 0 means genetics explains none of the variation; a value of 1 means it explains all of it. The heritability of IQ is often estimated at around 0.5, suggesting genes and environment both contribute substantially.

A crucial point for the exam: heritability describes variation across a population, not an individual. It is wrong to say a person's IQ is "50% genetic".

The Nurture Side: The Environment

The nurture argument is that behaviour is learned from the environment. In its extreme empiricist form, the mind begins as a blank slate and every characteristic is acquired through experience.

"Environment" is broader than upbringing alone. Psychologists distinguish different levels of environmental influence:

  • Prenatal — influences before birth, such as maternal diet, stress or exposure to toxins in the womb.
  • Postnatal — influences after birth, such as social conditions, family, culture and learning experiences.

Approaches and explanations that emphasise nurture include:

The behaviourist Watson claimed he could train any healthy infant to become any type of specialist, "regardless of his talents". This is the strongest possible statement of the nurture position, and few psychologists accept it today.

The Interactionist Approach

Modern psychology largely rejects the extreme positions. The interactionist approach argues that nature and nurture are so tightly entwined that separating them is meaningless. Behaviour results from their interaction. Three ideas make this concrete.

The diathesis-stress model. This proposes that a disorder needs two ingredients: a diathesis (a genetic or biological vulnerability) and a stressor (an environmental trigger). The vulnerability alone is not enough. A person may carry a genetic predisposition for OCD, schizophrenia or depression yet never develop it unless an environmental stressor, such as trauma or chronic stress, triggers it.

Diathesis-stress explains why two people with the same genetic risk can have different outcomes: only the one who also meets the environmental trigger develops the disorder.

Epigenetics. This is a change in gene expression rather than a change in the DNA itself. The environment can switch genes on or off without altering the underlying DNA sequence, and these changes can even be passed on to later generations. Studies of the Dutch Hunger Winter (a severe famine in the Netherlands in 1944–45) found that children of mothers who starved during pregnancy showed altered health outcomes decades later, consistent with epigenetic change.

Gene-environment interaction. People are not passive recipients of their environment. Their genetically influenced traits shape the environments they select and create, which then feed back to influence behaviour further.

Comparing the Two Sides

The most defensible position sits between these columns. Twin studies, for instance, report concordance rates that never reach 100% for identical (monozygotic) twins, showing that shared genes cannot fully account for a characteristic and that the environment must also play a part.

Evaluating the Debate (AO3)

A strong essay does more than describe the debate. It evaluates it. Develop three or four of the points below.

It is difficult to separate nature and nurture. Twins and family members share both their genes and, largely, their environment. Because these are confounded, concordance rates cannot cleanly isolate genetic influence: a high concordance between identical twins might reflect shared upbringing as much as shared DNA. This makes the strict question "how much is nature?" arguably unanswerable.

The interactionist approach is more realistic than either extreme. It fits the evidence that most behaviour reflects both inherited and environmental influence, and it has practical value. The diathesis-stress model, for example, underpins effective treatment that combines biological therapy (targeting the diathesis) with psychological therapy (managing the stressor), which tends to be more successful than either alone.

Constructivism blurs the divide further. People partly create their own "nurture" by selecting environments that suit their nature — a naturally aggressive child may seek out aggressive peers, intensifying the trait. This gene-environment correlation means nature and nurture are not two separate inputs but a feedback loop, strengthening the interactionist case.

The debate has real ethical stakes. Extreme nature (genetic determinism) has historically been used to justify eugenic thinking, while extreme nurture (environmental determinism) can remove personal agency and responsibility. Recognising these implications is a mature evaluation point.

Common Exam Mistakes

1. Treating nature and nurture as a simple either/or

The debate is about the relative contribution and, crucially, the interaction of heredity and environment. An answer that argues behaviour is caused by one alone misses the point of the modern debate and caps the evaluation available.

2. Confusing diathesis-stress with epigenetics

These are different interactionist ideas. Diathesis-stress is a genetic vulnerability triggered by an environmental stressor. Epigenetics is the environment changing gene expression (switching genes on or off) without altering the DNA sequence. Do not use the terms interchangeably.

3. Misusing "heritability" as if it applies to an individual

The heritability coefficient describes variation across a population, not the make-up of one person. Writing that someone's intelligence is "50% genetic and 50% environmental" misunderstands the concept.

4. Forgetting to name the interactionist approach

Many questions on this debate reward explicit reference to the interactionist approach and its examples (diathesis-stress, epigenetics, gene-environment interaction). Describing only nature and nurture leaves marks on the table.

5. Not illustrating the debate with course content

This is a synoptic topic. Points about nature or nurture should be anchored to named studies, approaches or explanations from elsewhere in the specification, such as attachment, the approaches, or explanations of psychopathology, rather than kept abstract.
