Combined vs Triple Science: what is on your spec

Is titration Triple only? Do you have to memorise specific heat capacity? A topic-by-topic guide to what AQA Combined Science leaves out, so you stop revising things you will never be asked.

The single most common question I get from GCSE Science students is not “how does this work?” It is “do I actually need this?” Someone has been handed a worksheet on titration, or a revision guide with a chapter on the life cycle of a star, and they have no idea whether it is on their paper or someone else’s.

Here is the rule that answers most of it: on AQA, Combined Science is the separate sciences with material taken out, not a different course. The specification marks the extra content with a label, and once you know the label you can settle any topic yourself in well under a minute. All of this is AQA: Combined Science: Trilogy (8464) and the separate GCSEs, Biology (8461), Chemistry (8462) and Physics (8463). Other exam boards divide their content differently, so if you are on Edexcel or OCR, check theirs.

What is the difference between Combined and Triple Science?

  • Combined Science: Trilogy (8464) is one course worth two GCSE grades. Six papers, 1 hour 15 minutes and 70 marks each, three at Foundation or Higher.
  • Triple (separate) Science is three GCSEs, 8461, 8462 and 8463. Two papers each, 1 hour 45 minutes and 100 marks.
  • The content is the same content. Triple adds extra topics, and the specification tags each of them (biology only), (chemistry only) or (physics only). AQA’s wording is that content only applicable to biology is indicated by (biology only).
  • Triple students also do 28 required practicals instead of 21.

Every row below is taken from the AQA specification’s own labels, with the section number so you can check it in about thirty seconds. “In Combined?” means the topic appears in Combined Science: Trilogy. “Higher only?” is marked Partial where part of a topic is Higher tier and the rest is not.

What does Combined Science actually cut?

Looking at the list as a whole, the cuts are not random. AQA has removed roughly a third of the content and, in each science, it has taken out the material that sits furthest from the core idea.

Biology

Combined keeps cells, organisation, infection and response, bioenergetics, homeostasis, inheritance and ecology. What it drops is the detail on top: the brain and the eye, temperature control, kidneys, plant hormones, cloning, DNA structure, and the whole food-production and trophic-levels block. Monoclonal antibodies are a double exclusion, biology only and Higher tier only, which is why so many Combined students are handed a worksheet on hybridoma cells they will never be examined on.

The one that catches people is culturing microorganisms. Aseptic technique, agar plates and zones of inhibition feel like classic GCSE Biology, and they are not in Combined at all.

Chemistry

Chemistry loses the most quantitative work. Titrations, concentrations in mol/dm³, gas volumes, percentage yield and atom economy are all Triple only, so a Combined paper asks for far less mole arithmetic. Organic chemistry is cut back to crude oil, fractional distillation and cracking, with alkene reactions, alcohols, carboxylic acids and polymers reserved for Triple. Transition metals, nanoparticles, fuel cells, the Haber process and identifying ions all go too.

If someone tells you titration is the classic GCSE Chemistry practical, they are right, and it is still one of the two required practicals Combined students never do.

Physics

Physics is where the cut is most visible, because an entire topic disappears. All of 4.8, space physics, is Triple only: the solar system, the life cycle of a star, orbits, red-shift and the Big Bang. Alongside that go static electricity, moments and gears, pressure in fluids and gases, lenses, colour, black body radiation, nuclear fission and fusion, and the transformers and National Grid block, which is physics only and Higher tier only at the same time.

Combined Science physics keeps energy, electricity, particle model, atomic structure, forces, waves and magnetism, and it is a genuinely coherent course. It just stops before the interesting bit about stars, which is a shame and not something a specification can help.

How many required practicals do I have to do?

Twenty-one for Combined, twenty-eight for Triple. AQA is explicit about why this matters: questions drawing on the required practicals “count for at least 15% of the overall marks for the qualification”. That is a bigger share of your grade than most students realise, and it is the part of revision that gets skipped because it feels like something you did in a lab rather than something you learn.

The seven Triple-only practicals are worth naming, because they are the ones a Combined student can safely ignore. Everything else on the list is shared.

  • Biology: antiseptics and antibiotics on agar plates (RP2), phototropism and gravitropism in seedlings (RP8), and the effect of temperature on the rate of decay of milk (RP10).
  • Chemistry: titration (RP2) and identifying ions in unknown compounds (RP7).
  • Physics: thermal insulation (RP2) and the reflection and refraction of light (RP9).

One thing worth knowing before you write practicals off as easy marks. In GCSEPod’s own Knowledge and Confidence Gap Analysis Report, based on more than 80,000 Key Stage 4 students answering its own quiz questions in 2022/23 (so it shows where GCSEPod users struggled rather than students in general), the Combined Science errors clustered around equations and data: applying an equation, recalling an equation, and processing and analysing results. That is exactly the skill required practical questions test. It is a maths problem wearing a lab coat.

Do I have to memorise this? Equations, values and lists

This is the second-biggest source of wasted revision after Triple-only content, and the answer is different for each kind of thing.

Physics equations. Normally some of them. The specification splits them in two: some you must “recall and apply” (weight W = mg, work done W = Fs, kinetic energy), and others you “select and apply” from the physics equation sheet (elastic potential energy, pressure in a column of liquid, the transformer equation).

For the exams being sat now, none of them. Following an Ofqual and DfE decision, a full equations sheet is provided in the exam room for the 2025, 2026 and 2027 series, so nothing has to be recalled from memory in those years. AQA has published separate arrangements for 2028 onwards, so if you are in Year 9 or Year 10 now, check its news page rather than assuming.

Either way, the sheet does not do the work for you. Having thirty equations in front of you and knowing which one a question wants are different skills, and the second is the one being marked.

Values, like the specific heat capacity of water. No. You are not asked to recall the specific heat capacity of any material, or a density, or a resistivity. If a number is needed it is in the question. The same goes for the wavelengths of the colours of visible light: no figures are required, only the order of the electromagnetic spectrum from radio through to gamma, and that visible light runs red to violet.

Named examples. Yes, and AQA is unusually specific about them.

  • Two inherited disorders: polydactyly and cystic fibrosis.
  • Blood vessels, limited to the aorta, vena cava, pulmonary artery, pulmonary vein and coronary arteries.
  • Five flame test colours, Triple Chemistry only: lithium crimson, sodium yellow, potassium lilac, calcium orange-red and copper green. The specification says the flame colours of other metal ions are not required.

When AQA writes “limited to” or “not required”, that is a promise. Take it.

What changes between Foundation and Higher?

Tier and course are separate questions, and it is easy to muddle them. Both Combined and Triple are available at Foundation (grades 1 to 5, or 1-1 to 5-5 for Combined) and Higher (grades 4 to 9). Content marked (HT only) appears on Higher papers only, and it is a different label from (biology only).

So a topic can be excluded twice over. Monoclonal antibodies are biology only and HT only: a Foundation Triple Biology student does not need them either. Transformers and the National Grid are physics only and HT only. If you are on Foundation, half the value of the table above is in the middle column and the other half is in the one next to it.

Is the specification changing for 2027?

People search for the “2027 syllabus” a lot, usually because a document title carries the exam year. As far as we could establish in September 2026, the AQA GCSE science specifications themselves are unchanged for 2027: 8461, 8462, 8463 and 8464 are the 2016 specifications and Ofqual’s wider curriculum and assessment review affects qualifications later than that. Treat that as our reading rather than a guarantee, because it is the sort of thing that moves.

What genuinely does change around then is the equation sheet arrangement described above, which currently covers the 2025, 2026 and 2027 series with different arrangements published for 2028 onwards. Before you act on anything to do with 2027, check AQA’s own news and specification pages, both linked in the sources at the bottom. If a revision site tells you a topic has been added or removed for 2027 and cannot point you at an AQA page saying so, do not believe it.

Should you take Triple? A short answer

Triple gives you three grades and more depth, and it helps if you are heading for A-level sciences. Combined gives you two grades from less content, which for a lot of students means better grades and more time for their other subjects. Most sixth forms accept strong Combined grades for science A-levels, but entry requirements vary, so check the ones you are actually applying to rather than taking anybody else’s word for it.

How to check anything yourself in 30 seconds

The specification answers this faster than a forum or a revision guide can, and the method is the same every time.

  1. Go to aqa.org.uk and open the specification for your separate science: 8461 for Biology, 8462 for Chemistry, 8463 for Physics. Use the separate spec even if you are doing Combined, because that is the one that carries the labels.
  2. Find your topic in the subject content. Use the section numbers in the table above, or the contents list.
  3. Look at the heading. If it says (biology only), (chemistry only) or (physics only), it is not on a Combined paper. If it says (HT only), it is not on a Foundation paper. If it says neither, it is on yours.
  4. Read the sentence before and after. AQA hedges the boundaries in plain English: “knowledge limited to”, “students do not need to know”, “recall of the unit is not required”. That is where the easiest revision savings are.

Two minutes with the actual specification beats an hour of asking around, and the habit pays off for the rest of your GCSEs. On AQA, Combined Science is Triple with content removed, and the specification labels every removed topic (biology only), (chemistry only) or (physics only). Combined students do 21 required practicals against 28, and those practicals are worth at least 15% of the marks. You never have to recall a physics value like the specific heat capacity of water, and for the 2025 to 2027 exams a full equation sheet is provided. When you are unsure, open the separate science specification and read the heading.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, on AQA. Titrations sit at 4.4.2.5 of the GCSE Chemistry (8462) specification and are labelled chemistry only, which means they are not in Combined Science: Trilogy. Required practical 2, the titration practical, is also Chemistry only. If you are doing Combined Science you will still meet neutralisation and the reactions of acids, but you will not be asked to carry out or calculate a titration. The titration calculation itself is Higher tier.

No. Titration is one of the clearest Triple-only topics on AQA. Combined Science: Trilogy students do six chemistry required practicals and titration is not one of them, and the titration content at 4.4.2.5 is marked chemistry only in the specification.

Zinc is not named as a required example. What the specification asks for, at 4.4.1.3, is the principle: metals less reactive than carbon can be extracted from their oxides by reduction with carbon, and more reactive metals are extracted by electrolysis. That content is in both Combined Science and Triple Chemistry. Zinc turns up in textbooks as an example of carbon reduction, so learn the principle and you can apply it to any metal you are given.

No. Blood groups and transfusions do not appear in the AQA GCSE Biology (8461) specification at all, in Combined or Triple. What is examinable is blood as a tissue (plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets), the structure and function of arteries, veins and capillaries, and the heart. Blood vessel knowledge is limited to the aorta, vena cava, pulmonary artery, pulmonary vein and coronary arteries.

No. You are never asked to recall the specific heat capacity of a material. Any value you need is given in the question. The equation itself, change in thermal energy = mass x specific heat capacity x temperature change, is one AQA provides rather than one you must recall, and for the 2025 to 2027 exam series a full physics equation sheet is provided in the exam. What you do need is to be able to pick the right equation, rearrange it and use the right units.

No. No numerical wavelengths are required. You need the order of the electromagnetic spectrum by increasing frequency and decreasing wavelength (radio, microwave, infrared, visible, ultraviolet, X-ray, gamma) and that visible light runs red through to violet. The detail about colour, filters and why an opaque object looks the colour it does sits at 4.6.2.6 and is physics only, so Combined Science students do not need it.

Polydactyly, having extra fingers or toes, caused by a dominant allele, and cystic fibrosis, a disorder of cell membranes, caused by a recessive allele. They are at 4.6.1.7 of the AQA Biology specification and they are in both Combined Science and Triple Biology.

Yes, but only for Triple. Required practical 2, investigating the effect of antiseptics or antibiotics on bacterial growth using agar plates, is labelled biology only, along with the culturing microorganisms content at 4.1.1.6. Combined Science students do seven biology required practicals and this is not one of them.

Twenty-one on AQA Combined Science: Trilogy: seven biology, six chemistry and eight physics. Triple students do twenty-eight in total, ten biology, eight chemistry and ten physics. AQA states that questions drawing on the required practicals count for at least 15% of the marks for the qualification.
