Key takeaways

  • Name the transport and accommodation: l'avion (plane), le train, l'hôtel (hotel), l'auberge de jeunesse (youth hostel), le camping (campsite).
  • Describe a past holiday with two tenses: passé composé for what happened (je suis allé, j'ai visité) and imparfait for description (il faisait beau, c'était génial).
  • Choose the right preposition for places: en + feminine country, au + masculine, aux + plural, à + city.
  • Use il y a (there is/are) to describe a place, and il y avait (there was/were) in the past.
  • Talk about future plans with aller + infinitive: je vais voyager (I'm going to travel).

Holidays and Transport

Travel questions almost always start with where you go and how you get there. Learn each noun with its article so the gender is automatic.

FrançaisEnglish
les vacances (f)the holidays
partir en vacancesto go on holiday
voyagerto travel
le voyagethe journey / trip
à l'étrangerabroad
l'avion (m)the plane
le trainthe train
la voiturethe car
le bateauthe boat
l'aéroport (m)the airport
la garethe (train) station
le billetthe ticket
la valisethe suitcase

Worked example: Cet été, je voyage à l'étranger en avion, et je prends le train pour aller à l'aéroport. — This summer, I'm travelling abroad by plane, and I take the train to get to the airport.

Say "by" a form of transport with en or à: en avion, en voiture, en train but à pied (on foot) and à vélo (by bike).

Accommodation and Booking

Once you have arrived, examiners want to know where you stay and how you organise it. These words cover the Speaking photo card and Writing tasks.

FrançaisEnglish
l'hôtel (m)the hotel
l'auberge de jeunesse (f)the youth hostel
le campingthe campsite
le gîtethe holiday cottage
la chambrethe (bed)room
réserverto book

une nuita night
la cléthe key
l'accueil (m)reception

Worked example: J'ai réservé une chambre pour trois nuits dans un petit hôtel près de la plage. — I booked a room for three nights in a small hotel near the beach.

Réserver takes a direct object (no preposition): réserver une chambre, réserver une table. Do not add à or pour before the thing you book.

Places of Interest and Directions

The topic is called "travel and tourism, including places of interest", so learn what you visit and how to ask the way.

FrançaisEnglish
le muséethe museum
le châteauthe castle
le monumentthe monument
l'office de tourisme (m)the tourist office
la plagethe beach
la montagnethe mountain(s)
visiterto visit (a place)
rendre visite àto visit (a person)
se baignerto swim / bathe
tout droitstraight on
à gauche / à droiteleft / right
tournez / prenezturn / take

Worked example: Pour aller au musée, continuez tout droit, puis tournez à gauche à l'office de tourisme. — To get to the museum, carry straight on, then turn left at the tourist office.

Keep visiter (places) and rendre visite à (people) apart: je visite Paris but je rends visite à mes grands-parents.

Talking About Past Holidays: Two Tenses Together

Describing last year's holiday is the classic Theme 3 task. You need the passé composé for the actions and the imparfait for the description, working side by side.

Use this tense…For…Example
passé composéa completed actionje suis allé(e), j'ai visité
imparfaitweather, feelings, backgroundil faisait beau, c'était génial

Remember that travel verbs like aller, partir and rester take être in the passé composé, and the participle agrees with the subject.

Worked examples:

  • L'année dernière, je suis allé(e) en Italie avec ma famille. — Last year, I went to Italy with my family.
  • Nous avons visité beaucoup de monuments et nous nous sommes baignés dans la mer. — We visited lots of monuments and we swam in the sea.
  • Il faisait très chaud et la nourriture était délicieuse, donc c'était des vacances inoubliables. — It was very hot and the food was delicious, so it was an unforgettable holiday.

Spot the split: j'ai visité (one completed action → passé composé) but il faisait chaud and c'était (description → imparfait).

Prepositions with Countries and Cities

Saying where you go trips up most students, because the preposition changes with the type of place.

Type of placePrepositionExamples
feminine countryenen France, en Espagne, en Italie
masculine countryauau Portugal, au Canada, au Maroc
plural countryauxaux États-Unis, aux Pays-Bas
a town or cityàà Paris, à Londres, à Nice

Most countries ending in -e are feminine (la France, l'Espagne, l'Italie), with the common exception le Mexique.

Worked examples:

  • Je vais en France et ensuite en Suisse. — I'm going to France and then to Switzerland.
  • Mon frère habite au Portugal, mais moi je préfère les vacances aux États-Unis. — My brother lives in Portugal, but I prefer holidays in the USA.
  • L'année prochaine, nous allons à Marseille. — Next year, we're going to Marseille.

Boost Your Answer: Plans, il y a and Opinions

To reach the top bands, add a future plan, describe a place with il y a, and glue everything together with opinions and connectives.

FrançaisEnglish
il y a…there is / there are…
il y avait…there was / there were…
je vais + infinitifI'm going to…
d'abord / ensuite / puisfirst / then / next
à mon avisin my opinion
ce qui est génial, c'est…what's great is…

Worked examples:

  • L'été prochain, je vais voyager en Grèce avec mes amis. — Next summer, I'm going to travel to Greece with my friends.
  • Dans mon hôtel, il y a une piscine et un restaurant; il y avait aussi une belle vue. — In my hotel, there is a pool and a restaurant; there was also a lovely view.
  • À mon avis, les vacances au bord de la mer sont plus relaxantes que les vacances en ville. — In my opinion, seaside holidays are more relaxing than city holidays.

Common Mistakes with Travel and Tourism

1. Using the wrong preposition for a country

It is en France, au Portugal and aux États-Unis, never à France. Match the preposition to the gender or number of the country.

2. Forgetting être in the past tense of aller and partir

Travel verbs like aller, partir, arriver and rester take être: je suis allé, not j'ai allé. The participle then agrees: elle est allée, ils sont partis.

3. Mixing up visiter and rendre visite à

Use visiter for places (je visite le château) and rendre visite à for people (je rends visite à ma tante). Do not say je visite ma tante.

4. Using only one past tense

A past-holiday answer needs both: passé composé for what happened and imparfait for the description. "Je suis allé en Espagne, il faisait beau et c'était super" scores far better than actions alone.

5. Adding a preposition after réserver

Réserver is directly followed by its object: j'ai réservé une chambre. Do not write réserver pour une chambre or réserver à un hôtel.

Key terms

l'auberge de jeunesse
A youth hostel: a cheap, shared type of holiday accommodation, e.g. dormir dans une auberge de jeunesse.
passé composé
The main French past tense for completed actions, formed with avoir or être plus a past participle, e.g. j'ai voyagé, je suis parti.
imparfait
The imperfect tense, used for description and background in the past, e.g. il faisait beau (the weather was nice).

Frequently asked questions

Use two past tenses together. Passé composé narrates what you did (je suis allé en Espagne, j'ai visité un musée) and the imparfait describes the scene (il faisait chaud, c'était magnifique).

It depends on the place: en France (feminine country), au Portugal (masculine country), aux États-Unis (plural country) and à Paris (a city).

Visiter is for places: je visite le musée (I visit the museum). Rendre visite à is for people: je rends visite à ma tante (I visit my aunt).
