This topic covers the devices you use every day and what you do with them. Learn each noun with its article so the gender is locked in.

Worked example: J'utilise mon portable tous les jours pour surfer sur Internet et télécharger des applis. — I use my mobile every day to surf the internet and download apps.

Say "on" the internet with sur: sur Internet, sur mon portable, sur les réseaux sociaux. Internet takes no article in French: je suis sur Internet.

Most exam answers focus on communication and social media. These verbs and nouns describe how people stay in touch online.

Worked example: Grâce aux réseaux sociaux, je partage des photos et je reste en contact avec mes amis. — Thanks to social media, I share photos and I stay in touch with my friends.

Grâce à (thanks to) contracts like any à: grâce au portable, grâce aux réseaux sociaux. It is the perfect way to introduce a benefit.

Examiners expect a balanced view, so you must be able to discuss the risks as well as the benefits.

Worked example: Il faut choisir un bon mot de passe pour protéger ses données et éviter les arnaques. — You must choose a good password to protect your data and avoid scams.

Le harcèlement has one r and two e patterns to watch: har-cè-le-ment, with an accent grave on the è. Spelling it correctly matters in the dictation task.

The modal verbs pouvoir (can) and devoir (must) are everywhere in this topic. Both are followed by an infinitive.

Worked examples:

• Avec un portable, on peut discuter en ligne et regarder des vidéos. — With a mobile, you can chat online and watch videos.
• On doit protéger ses données personnelles sur Internet. — One must protect one's personal data on the internet.
• Les jeunes ne doivent pas partager leur mot de passe. — Young people must not share their password.

After a modal, the second verb stays in the infinitive: je peux télécharger, not je peux télécharge.

The strongest answers argue both sides. Set up a clear "for" and "against" structure and let the connectives do the work.

• Un avantage, c'est qu'on peut rester en contact avec sa famille à l'étranger. — An advantage is that you can stay in touch with your family abroad.
• Cependant, un inconvénient, c'est qu'on peut devenir dépendant des réseaux sociaux. — However, a disadvantage is that you can become addicted to social media.
• D'un côté, la technologie est pratique; de l'autre côté, elle peut être dangereuse. — On one hand, technology is practical; on the other, it can be dangerous.

To lift your answer, add a justified opinion, a near-future plan and precise connectives so the response develops rather than lists.

• Je vais télécharger une appli pour limiter mon temps d'écran. — I'm going to download an app to limit my screen time.
• La technologie est pratique, de plus elle nous aide à apprendre. — Technology is practical; moreover, it helps us to learn.

1. Conjugating the verb after a modal

Pouvoir and devoir are followed by an infinitive: je peux envoyer, on doit protéger. Never write je peux envoie or on doit protège.

2. Adding an article to Internet

French uses no article here: sur Internet, je suis sur Internet. Do not write sur l'Internet or le Internet.

3. Treating réseaux sociaux as singular

Les réseaux sociaux is masculine plural, so adjectives and verbs agree: les réseaux sociaux sont dangereux, not est dangereux.

4. Forgetting the contraction in grâce à

À contracts with le and les: grâce au portable, grâce aux applis. Do not write grâce à le or grâce à les.

5. Giving a one-sided answer

The topic rewards balance. Pair every un avantage, c'est que… with an un inconvénient, c'est que…, linked by cependant or par contre, rather than listing only positives.
