StudyFetch is powerful but US-oriented and paywalled. Here are the AI study tools genuinely worth switching to, compared on features, free tiers and price.

StudyFetch is one of the better-known AI study tools: upload a document, a lecture recording or a video, and it turns it into flashcards, quizzes, summaries and an AI tutor called Spark.E. It is genuinely capable. But it is built around the US school system, its paid plans start higher than some UK-focused apps, and plenty of students go looking for something priced in pounds, aligned to their exam board, or simply better at one specific job.

This is a shortlist of the seven alternatives worth switching to, from full AI study systems to free document tools. We compared each on the things that actually matter: whether it generates study material with AI, whether it schedules reviews with spaced repetition, whether it is built for UK exams, how good the free tier is, and price. Prices are as of July 2026 and are linked in the sources at the end.

Why students switch from StudyFetch

It is worth being clear about what you are actually trying to fix, because it changes which tool you should pick:

  • Price and region. StudyFetch is priced in dollars and oriented to US courses. If you want a tool in pounds and mapped to GCSE or A-level, that is the main reason to switch.
  • Retention, not just generation. Making flashcards is easy; remembering them is the hard part. Some students want a tool that schedules spaced-repetition review, not just one that produces cards.
  • One job done well. If you only want to question your own PDFs, a focused free tool like NotebookLM may serve you better than a whole suite.

The 7 best StudyFetch alternatives

1. Aicademy — best all-in-one for UK exams

An Aicademy lesson open with an AI notes panel and the Aica tutor
Aicademy turns a topic or your uploads into a lesson, with AI notes and a tutor alongside it.

Like StudyFetch, Aicademy takes a topic or an upload and generates study material from it. The difference is what it generates and who it is for: a structured lesson, a quiz and a spaced-repetition flashcard deck, all shaped by a learning profile you set once, and built for UK GCSE and A-level rather than US courses. There is a built-in AI tutor, Aica, that already knows what you are studying.

Where it is weaker: it is newer than StudyFetch and does not ingest as many exotic file types, such as long lecture videos. If turning hours of recorded lectures into notes is your main need, StudyFetch or NotebookLM may suit you better. We lay out the head-to-head in full on our Aicademy vs StudyFetch page.

Best for: UK students who want a full study system, not just flashcards · Free tier, Pro £4.99/mo

2. Mindgrasp — best for turning long uploads into notes

Mindgrasp is the closest like-for-like to StudyFetch: it ingests PDFs, videos, lectures and audio and produces notes, summaries, flashcards and quiz questions, with an AI assistant you can ask about the material. It is strong if your workflow is upload-heavy. Like StudyFetch it is US-oriented and priced in dollars, so it solves the feature question more than the region-and-price one.

Best for: students who need to summarise lots of documents and recordings · Free tier, paid from ~$9.99/mo

3. Knowt — best free flashcards from your notes

Knowt became popular as a free Quizlet replacement, and it has added solid AI tools: it can generate flashcards and notes from an upload, and it keeps flashcards, Learn mode and practice tests free. If your main use of StudyFetch was the flashcard side, Knowt gives you most of that without the price.

Best for: anyone who wants AI flashcards and study modes kept free · Generous free tier, paid from ~$12/mo

4. Quizlet — best for ready-made sets

Quizlet is still the biggest library of ready-made study sets, and its Magic Notes feature can turn a document into flashcards. It moved several once-free features behind its paywall over 2025 and 2026, so check what is still free, but if you want existing sets rather than generating your own, nothing has Quizlet’s scale. See our Quizlet alternatives piece if that is your starting point.

Best for: students who want a huge library of ready-made public sets · Free tier, Plus ~$7.99/mo

5. NotebookLM — best free tool for your own documents

Google’s NotebookLM is a different shape: you give it your sources, and it answers questions grounded only in those documents, with citations, plus study guides and a genuinely useful podcast-style audio overview. It is free and excellent for revising from your own notes without hallucinated extras. It does not do spaced repetition or exam-board material, so it is a companion, not a full system.

Best for: students revising from their own notes who want grounded answers · Free

6. Google Gemini — best free general AI assistant

Gemini is a capable general-purpose assistant that can explain topics, generate practice questions and work through your uploads, with a strong free tier and student offers at times. Like any chat tool, the catch is that nothing is saved as a reusable, scheduled study system: the work lives in the conversation.

Best for: students who want a strong free assistant for explanations · Free tier, paid plans available

7. ChatGPT — best for explaining and Study Mode

ChatGPT is the tool most students already reach for, and its Study Mode guides you with questions instead of just handing over answers. It is a superb explainer. But like Gemini it is a chat, not a study system: no saved lessons, no spaced repetition, no exam-board alignment. We cover this in depth in is ChatGPT good for studying?

Best for: students who want the best explainer and to learn with questions · Free tier, Plus $20/mo

Where StudyFetch still wins

To be fair to it: StudyFetch is very good at the thing it was built for, which is ingesting a wide range of media, including long lecture videos and audio, and turning it into study material with a single tool. If you are a university student drowning in recorded lectures, that breadth of input is a real strength, and its Spark.E tutor is capable. None of this list is about StudyFetch being bad. It is about fit: UK exams, price in pounds, and spaced repetition are where the alternatives pull ahead.

How to choose

If you want a full study system built for UK GCSE and A-level, start with Aicademy. If you need to turn lots of documents and recordings into notes, Mindgrasp is the closest like-for-like. For free flashcards, Knowt; for questioning your own documents, NotebookLM; for explanations, ChatGPT or Gemini.

Whatever you choose, the thing that moves your grades is not how slickly a tool generates material, but whether you then test yourself on it over time. Pick the tool that makes that easiest to keep doing.

For the record: we make Aicademy, and it is at the top of our own list, so treat that with healthy suspicion. It earned the spot on the same tests as every other tool here, and we have been upfront about where StudyFetch and the others beat it.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on what you want it for. For a full study system that generates lessons, quizzes and spaced-repetition flashcards and is built for UK exams, Aicademy is the closest all-in-one alternative. If you mainly want to summarise and question your own documents, NotebookLM is excellent and free. For flashcards specifically, Knowt keeps more free than most.

Yes. NotebookLM is free and turns your uploaded documents into summaries, study guides and a podcast-style audio overview. Knowt has a generous free tier for AI flashcards and notes. Aicademy has a free tier that generates lessons, quizzes and flashcards from a topic or your own notes.

StudyFetch is a capable tool, but it is built around the US school system, its paid plans start higher than some UK-focused apps, and a lot of students want something priced in pounds and aligned to GCSE and A-level. Others simply want a specific feature StudyFetch does not focus on, such as spaced-repetition scheduling or exam-board-specific material.

Aicademy is built for UK GCSE and A-level, is priced in pounds, and generates study material for your exact topic rather than being oriented to US courses. Seneca and Save My Exams are also worth a look for exam-board-aligned content, though they are libraries of ready-made material rather than AI generators.

Aicademy has a free tier with 20 creations a month across lessons, quizzes, flashcards, learning paths and document uploads, plus 10 AI tutor messages a day. Pro is £4.99 a month, or £39.99 a year, and removes the limits.

Yes, most of them. Aicademy, Mindgrasp, Knowt, NotebookLM and ChatGPT can all take an upload and produce summaries, flashcards or questions. The difference is what happens next: Aicademy and Knowt keep the flashcards in a spaced-repetition system so you actually review them, while a chat tool leaves the output in the conversation.
