It is free and genuinely useful for revising from a big pile of your own material, though it does not generate fresh practice or schedule your review.

4. Google Gemini — best multimodal explainer

Gemini’s Guided Learning mode gives Socratic tutoring with visuals and can build study guides from your uploads. It is a genuine rival to ChatGPT Study Mode. The snag for UK students is that the generous free student perks have been US-focused rather than UK.

Khan Academy’s AI tutor takes a careful Socratic approach and is cheap at around $4 a month (free for teachers). It is well designed and safe, but it is tied to Khan’s US K-12 curriculum with no UK exam-board mapping, so it fits UK students less neatly.
