Re-reading notes feels productive. The words are familiar, the concepts seem clear, and by the end of a chapter everything appears to make sense. The problem is that recognition and recall are different cognitive processes — and exams test recall, not recognition.

  • One concept or fact per card — not a paragraph of information

The Cornell method:

Divide a page into two columns: a narrow left column and a wide right column. During study, write notes in the right column. Immediately after, write questions in the left column — each question should be answerable only by reading the corresponding right-column notes. 3. Using active recall only on material you already know
