Media and technology answers start with the right nouns for devices and what you do with them. Learn each noun with its gender.

Worked example: Uso mi móvil todos los días para chatear y navegar por internet. — I use my phone every day to chat and surf the internet.

Note the gender: el móvil, el ordenador and el portátil are masculine, but la pantalla, la aplicación and la tableta are feminine. Getting the article right protects your accuracy marks.

Social media (las redes sociales) is the highest-value sub-topic. Build a set of verbs for what people do online.

Worked example: Me encanta compartir fotos y seguir a mis cantantes favoritos en las redes sociales. — I love sharing photos and following my favourite singers on social media.

Note that seguir a alguien keeps the personal a before a person: sigo a mis amigos.

The topic also covers what people watch. These nouns work for describing viewing habits and preferences.

Worked example: Prefiero ver series en internet en vez de los programas de la televisión. — I prefer watching series online instead of TV programmes.

El programa is masculine even though it ends in -a: el programa favorito. Watch this trap with words of Greek origin (el problema, el tema, el clima).

The topic is opinion-heavy, so lead with an opinion phrase and back it up with a reason using porque.

Worked examples:

• Creo que los móviles son imprescindibles porque puedes contactar con todo el mundo. — I think mobiles are essential because you can contact everyone.
• Me parece que pasamos demasiado tiempo delante de la pantalla. — It seems to me that we spend too much time in front of the screen.
• En mi opinión, las redes sociales pueden ser adictivas. — In my opinion, social media can be addictive.

Weighing up pros (ventajas) and cons (desventajas) shows a strong grasp of the topic. Use comparatives to contrast old and new, or one option with another.

mejor / peor	better / worse	La cámara nueva es mejor que la vieja.

The irregular comparatives mejor (better) and peor (worse) replace más bueno and más malo. They agree in number only: mejores, peores.

Model pros and cons:

• Lo bueno es que puedes encontrar información rápidamente. — The good thing is that you can find information quickly.
• Lo malo es que existe el ciberacoso y la falta de privacidad. — The bad thing is that there is cyberbullying and a lack of privacy.

Learn a handful of flexible sentences that combine vocabulary, an opinion and a structure. Swap the details to fit any question.

• Uso el móvil todos los días para chatear con mis amigos. — I use my phone every day to chat with my friends.
• Aunque la tecnología es muy útil, debemos tener cuidado con la privacidad. — Although technology is very useful, we must be careful with privacy.
• Lo bueno de las redes sociales es que puedes compartir tu vida; lo malo es el ciberacoso. — The good thing about social media is that you can share your life; the bad thing is cyberbullying.
• Prefiero ver películas en línea porque es más cómodo que ir al cine. — I prefer watching films online because it is more convenient than going to the cinema.

aunque (although) plus a contrast lets you show both sides in one sentence, which lifts a written answer above simple statements.

1. Using más bueno and más malo

The standard comparatives are mejor (better) and peor (worse). Write esta app es mejor, not más buena.

2. Wrong gender on device nouns

It is el móvil, el ordenador, el portátil, but la pantalla, la aplicación, la tableta. Check the article every time.

3. Forgetting the personal a with people

You follow people, so keep the a: sigo a mis amigos, seguir a un famoso.

4. Treating el programa as feminine

Despite the -a ending it is masculine: el programa, este programa. The same applies to el problema, el tema and el clima.

5. me gusta versus me gustan

Match the verb to what is liked: me gusta la tele (singular) but me gustan las redes sociales (plural).
