Key takeaways

  • Use jouer à for games and sports (je joue au foot) but jouer de for musical instruments (je joue du piano) — à contracts to au/aux, de to du/des.
  • Use faire de + activity for many hobbies: je fais du sport, de la natation, de l'équitation, des randonnées.
  • After a verb of liking (aimer, adorer, détester, préférer) the second verb stays in the infinitive: j'aime lire, je déteste faire mes devoirs.
  • Add an opinion plus a reason with parce que or car to lift any free-time answer: j'aime le foot parce que c'est passionnant.
  • For weekend plans use the near future: aller in the present + infinitive, e.g. je vais regarder un film ce soir.

Why Free-time Vocabulary Pays Off in Every Paper

Free-time activities is one of the most reliable topics across all four AQA papers: you might hear someone describe their weekend in Listening, read a blog about hobbies in Reading, answer photo-card questions about leisure in Speaking, and write about what you do in your free time in Writing. It rewards a solid bank of activity vocabulary plus three grammar patterns: jouer à / jouer de, faire de, and aimer + infinitive.

FrançaisEnglish
le temps librefree time
le passe-tempshobby / pastime
les loisirsleisure activities
sortir (avec des amis)to go out (with friends)
se détendre / se reposerto relax / to rest
pendant le week-endduring the weekend

Build the vocabulary first, then attach the right structure to it.

Sports and Games: jouer à vs faire de

French uses two different verbs for sport. Jouer à is for games and ball sports; faire de is for activities you do or go. Both involve contractions you must get right.

jouer à + game/sport: à + le = au, à + les = aux (à la and à l' do not contract). faire de + activity: de + le = du, de + les = des (de la and de l' do not contract).

StructureExampleEnglish
jouer auje joue au footI play football
jouer à laje joue à la pétanqueI play boules
jouer auxje joue aux cartesI play cards
faire duje fais du véloI go cycling
faire de laje fais de la natationI go swimming
faire de l'je fais de l'équitationI go horse-riding
faire desje fais des randonnéesI go hiking

After a negative, du / de la / des all shrink to de: je ne fais pas de sport (I don't do any sport).

Music, Reading, Screens and Going Out

For musical instruments, French switches to jouer de: de + le = du, so je joue du piano. Beyond music, group your leisure vocabulary by field so you can recall it fast in the exam.

FrançaisEnglish
jouer du piano / de la guitareto play the piano / guitar
écouter de la musiqueto listen to music
lire (un roman, une BD)to read (a novel, a comic)
regarder un film / une sérieto watch a film / a series
aller au cinémato go to the cinema
surfer sur Internetto surf the internet
jouer aux jeux vidéoto play video games
passer du temps en ligneto spend time online
  • Le week-end, je joue de la guitare et j'écoute de la musique. — At the weekend I play the guitar and listen to music.
  • Le soir, je regarde une série ou je joue aux jeux vidéo. — In the evening I watch a series or play video games.

Saying What You Like: Opinion Verb + Infinitive

To say you like doing something, use an opinion verb followed by the infinitive (the second verb never changes). This single pattern powers most free-time answers.

Opinion verb (+ infinitive)English
j'aime lireI like reading
j'adore faire du sportI love doing sport
je préfère sortir avec mes amisI prefer going out with my friends
je n'aime pas jouer aux cartesI don't like playing cards
je déteste faire mes devoirsI hate doing my homework

Note the definite article when you like something in general: j'aime le foot, j'adore la musique, je préfère les jeux vidéo.

  • J'adore faire du vélo, mais je déteste faire de la natation. — I love cycling, but I hate swimming.
  • Je préfère lire un roman parce que c'est relaxant. — I prefer reading a novel because it is relaxing.

Boost Your Answer: Reasons, Qualifiers and Plans

A one-word opinion scores little. Add a reason, a qualifier, and a plan for next time to reach the top bands. Use these building blocks.

Reasons (parce que / car…)QualifiersConnectives
c'est passionnant (exciting)vraiment (really)et (and)
c'est relaxant (relaxing)assez (quite)mais (but)
c'est divertissant (entertaining)très (very)parce que / car (because)
ça me détend (it relaxes me)un peu (a bit)par contre (on the other hand)

For future plans, use the near future — the present of aller + an infinitive:

  • Ce week-end, je vais aller au cinéma avec mes amis. — This weekend I'm going to go to the cinema with my friends.
  • Plus tard, je vais faire de la danse parce que c'est bon pour la santé. — Later I'm going to do dance because it's good for your health.

A Model Paragraph

A strong free-time answer combines the present tense (what you usually do), an opinion with a reason, and the near future (plans). Adapt this model:

Pendant mon temps libre, je fais du sport trois fois par semaine et je joue au foot avec mon équipe. Le soir, j'aime écouter de la musique et jouer de la guitare parce que ça me détend. Je préfère sortir avec mes amis, mais quand il pleut je reste à la maison et je joue aux jeux vidéo. Ce week-end, je vais aller au cinéma pour voir le nouveau film.

In my free time I do sport three times a week and I play football with my team. In the evening I like listening to music and playing the guitar because it relaxes me. I prefer going out with my friends, but when it rains I stay at home and play video games. This weekend I'm going to go to the cinema to see the new film.

Common Mistakes with Free-time French

1. Confusing jouer à and jouer de

Use jouer à for sports and games (je joue au tennis) and jouer de for musical instruments (je joue du piano). Saying je joue au piano or je joue du foot is a classic slip.

2. Forgetting the contractions

à + le = au, à + les = aux, de + le = du, de + les = des. Write je joue au foot and je fais du vélo, never je joue à le foot or je fais de le vélo.

3. Conjugating the second verb after an opinion verb

After aimer, adorer, détester and préférer, the next verb stays in the infinitive: *j'aime lire*, not j'aime je lis.

4. Dropping de after a negative

All of du / de la / des become de after a negative: je ne fais pas de sport, not je ne fais pas du sport.

5. Leaving out the article for general likes

When you like something in general, keep the definite article: j'aime le foot, j'adore la musique. English drops "the", but French keeps it.

Key terms

le temps libre
Free time; the time when you are not working or studying.
le passe-temps
A hobby or pastime.
jouer à
To play (a sport or game); à contracts to au before a masculine noun and aux before a plural.
jouer de
To play (a musical instrument); de contracts to du before a masculine noun.
faire de
To do or go (an activity); used for many sports and hobbies, e.g. faire du vélo, faire de la natation.

Frequently asked questions

Use jouer à for sports and games (je joue au tennis, je joue aux cartes) and jouer de for musical instruments (je joue de la guitare, je joue du piano). Remember à + le = au and de + le = du.

Use faire de: je fais du sport (I do sport), je fais de la danse (I do dance), je fais de l'escalade (I do climbing), je fais des randonnées (I go hiking). After a negative, de la/du/des all become de: je ne fais pas de sport.

Start with an opinion verb (j'aime, j'adore, je déteste, je préfère) or a phrase (à mon avis, selon moi), then add a reason with parce que or car: j'adore le cinéma parce que c'est divertissant.
