Frequently asked questions
Divide the quantity of reactant used or product formed by the time taken. For example, if 48 cm³ of gas is collected in 60 seconds, the mean rate is 48 ÷ 60 = 0.8 cm³/s.
If you measure mass, the units are g/s; if you measure gas volume, they are cm³/s. At Higher Tier, if the amount is measured in moles, the units are mol/s.
Draw a tangent to the curve at that time (a straight line just touching the curve). At Higher Tier, calculate the gradient of the tangent (change in y ÷ change in x) to get the rate at that instant.
