Key takeaways
- Revenue equals price multiplied by quantity sold and is not the same as profit — a business with high revenue can still make a loss if its costs exceed that revenue.
- Fixed costs (such as rent and manager salaries) stay the same regardless of output; variable costs (such as raw materials) change in direct proportion to the number of units produced.
- Total costs equal fixed costs plus variable costs; when output rises, only the variable element increases — fixed costs do not change.
- Profit equals revenue minus total costs; a negative result is a loss, not zero profit, and must be clearly labelled as such in calculations.
- Interest is the cost of borrowing and reduces profit; a business borrowing at 5% annual interest on a 10,000 loan pays 500 per year in interest, reducing its net profit by that amount.

Frequently asked questions
Revenue is the total money a business receives from sales (price multiplied by quantity). Profit is what remains after all costs are subtracted from revenue. A business can have high revenue but still make a loss if total costs exceed revenue.
Fixed costs do not change with output — rent and salaries must be paid whether the business produces nothing or thousands of units. Variable costs change in direct proportion to output, such as raw materials and packaging.
Gross profit is revenue minus variable costs (cost of sales) and shows whether trading activity is profitable before overheads. Net profit subtracts fixed costs from gross profit and is the true bottom line — a business can have positive gross profit but a net loss if overheads are too high.
