Key takeaways
- Radio waves are used for television and radio broadcasting; microwaves are used for satellite communications and for cooking food.
- Infrared is used in electric heaters, in cooking food and in infrared cameras; visible light is used for fibre-optic communications.
- Ultraviolet is used in energy-efficient lamps and in sun tanning; X-rays and gamma rays are used for medical imaging and treatments.
- (Higher Tier) Each type of EM wave is suited to its use by its properties, such as how far it travels, how it passes through or is absorbed by materials, and how much energy it carries.
- The EM spectrum runs from radio (lowest frequency, longest wavelength) up to gamma (highest frequency, shortest wavelength), and the use of each group follows from its position.

Key terms
- Optical fibre
- A thin, flexible strand of glass or plastic that carries data as pulses of visible light or infrared reflected along its length.
- Infrared camera
- A device that detects the infrared radiation emitted by objects and turns it into an image showing how hot different parts are.
Frequently asked questions
Radio: TV and radio. Microwaves: satellite communications and cooking. Infrared: heaters, cooking and infrared cameras. Visible light: fibre-optic communications. Ultraviolet: energy-efficient lamps and sun tanning. X-rays and gamma rays: medical imaging and treatments.
Microwaves are used for satellite communication because they pass easily through the Earth's atmosphere, including cloud. That lets a signal travel up to an orbiting satellite and back down again to a receiver on the ground with little absorption.
Visible light is used in optical fibres because it can be reflected repeatedly along the inside of a thin glass fibre, carrying data over long distances quickly and with little energy loss, allowing large amounts of information to be sent.
