Why the Renaissance Began to Change Medicine

For centuries, medicine "stood still" because people trusted the ancient authority of Galen and the Church discouraged questioning him. From around 1500, this began to shift. The Renaissance (a "rebirth" of learning) brought a new willingness to observe the world and challenge old ideas.

Several changes made progress possible:

The key shift was in attitude: it became respectable to say that the great Galen might be wrong, and to prove it by looking for yourself.

Andreas Vesalius: The Anatomy of the Human Body

Andreas Vesalius (1514–1564) was a professor in Italy who insisted on dissecting human bodies himself rather than trusting old texts. In 1543 he published De Humani Corporis Fabrica (On the Fabric of the Human Body), a beautifully illustrated study of human anatomy.

His importance:

  • He produced accurate, detailed anatomical drawings based on real dissection.
  • He proved Galen had made mistakes — for example, Galen had described the human jaw as two bones (true of animals) when the human jaw is one bone. Galen's errors came from dissecting animals, not humans.
  • By showing Galen was fallible, he encouraged others to check facts through observation.

His book was printed and copied across Europe. A shortened version, the Compendiosa compiled by Thomas Geminus, reached Britain and became a manual for surgeons. Vesalius shows the factors of the individual, science and technology (printing) and communication working together.

Ambroise Paré: Improving Surgery

Ambroise Paré (1510–1590) was a French barber-surgeon who worked on battlefields, where the factor of war gave him constant practice with terrible wounds. He made surgery safer and less agonising.

Two changes are especially important:

1. Treating gunshot wounds

The standard treatment was to pour boiling oil onto wounds. When Paré ran out of oil during a battle, he made a cool ointment of egg yolk, rose oil and turpentine instead. The next day, the men treated with his ointment were in far less pain and healing better. He had found a gentler, more effective method almost by chance.

2. Stopping bleeding after amputation

To seal the wound after cutting off a limb, surgeons used cauterisation — a red-hot iron. Paré used ligatures instead: tying silk threads around the arteries to stop the bleeding. This was less painful, though it could carry infection into the wound.

Paré wrote up his methods in books that were translated and read in Britain, so his ideas spread. He is a strong example of the individual and war as factors driving progress.

William Harvey and the Circulation of the Blood

William Harvey (1578–1657) was an English doctor who studied at Padua in Italy and later served as physician to King James I and King Charles I. He solved a question Galen had got wrong: how blood moves in the body.

Galen had taught that the liver constantly made new blood, which the body used up like fuel. Harvey, through careful experiments and dissection, proved this was false.

Harvey published his findings in 1628 in De Motu Cordis (On the Motion of the Heart). He used mathematics to show the heart pumped far too much blood for the liver to keep replacing it, and studied the one-way valves in the veins.

Harvey proved the circulation of the blood: the heart pumps blood in a continuous loop around the body. This overturned Galen and laid essential groundwork for later surgery and transfusion.

Great Ideas, Limited Immediate Impact

It is easy to assume these three men transformed medicine at once. In the exam, the stronger point is more careful: their impact on understanding was huge, but the impact on treating everyday patients was limited for a long time.

  • There was still no idea of what caused disease — germ theory was over 200 years away.
  • Many doctors resisted the new ideas and kept teaching Galen, so change was slow.
  • Harvey proved blood circulates, but this could not be used for safe transfusions until blood groups were discovered in the 20th century.
  • Ordinary people were still treated with bleeding, purging and herbal remedies.

So the Renaissance is best described as the beginning of change: it changed how educated people thought about the body — through observation, dissection and questioning authority — even if better cures took much longer to follow.

Common Exam Mistakes

1. Saying Renaissance discoveries immediately cured patients

They did not. Vesalius, Paré and Harvey improved knowledge of anatomy, surgery and the circulation, not the treatment of disease. The best answers explain this limited short-term impact.

2. Mixing up who did what

Keep them separate: Vesalius = anatomy and Fabrica (1543); Paré = surgery, ointment and ligatures; Harvey = circulation of the blood and De Motu Cordis (1628).

3. Getting Harvey's discovery slightly wrong

Harvey proved blood circulates in one direction, pumped by the heart. He did not discover blood groups or make transfusions possible — that came centuries later.

4. Ignoring how ideas reached Britain

Significance answers reward explaining the printing press and books (the Fabrica, Geminus's Compendiosa, Paré's translated works) that carried these ideas to Britain. This is the factor of communication.

5. Forgetting the opposition

Progress was slow partly because many doctors clung to Galen. Noting this resistance shows you understand that change is rarely quick or unopposed — exactly the analysis the significance question wants.
