- A helper verb (avoir or être) combined with a past participle to form the perfect tense, such as j'ai mangé.

Frequently asked questions
Avoir goes j'ai, tu as, il a, nous avons, vous avez, ils ont. Être goes je suis, tu es, il est, nous sommes, vous êtes, ils sont. Both are irregular and must be learned by heart because they are the two perfect-tense auxiliaries.
French treats age as something you have, not something you are. J'ai quinze ans literally means I have fifteen years. The same logic gives j'ai faim (I have hunger = I am hungry) and j'ai froid (I am cold).
Faire means to do or make and describes weather and activities (il fait beau, je fais du sport). Aller means to go and, followed by an infinitive, forms the near future (je vais partir = I am going to leave).
