Why Multitasking Breaks Focus

What “context switching” actually means

Context switching is when you stop one task and jump to another.

For example:

  • writing → checking a message
  • studying → opening a new tab
  • coding → replying to a notification

Even small switches count. You don’t need to fully change tasks, just shifting attention is enough.

Why it feels harmless

Most switches take only seconds.

You think:

  • “I’ll just check this quickly”
  • “This won’t break my flow”
  • “I’ll come right back”

The switch feels cheap. The cost is hidden and delayed.

What actually gets lost

When you work, your brain builds a mental setup.

That setup includes:

  • what you were trying to solve
  • where you were heading
  • what you already ruled out

When you switch tasks, that setup starts to fade. Coming back means rebuilding it.
